Shefstim: A clinical trial of automated FES setup for drop foot using the Shefstim electrode array stimulator

Wed 23rd Nov, 2011

While FES is an effective technique of correcting foot-drop for patients with upper motor neuron lesions, a significant minority of FES patients have difficulties finding sites for electrodes which provide an acceptable foot movement.  A potential solution to this issue is the use of a stimulator where an array of many electrodes, large enough to ensure coverage of the target neural tissue, replaces a conventional electrode.  One or more of the electrodes from within this array are then stimulated, while the response of the limb is monitored, and the optimal stimulation configuration is found through an appropriate search strategy.
