| How does the ODFS work? | ![]() ![]() |
The Odstock Dropped
Foot Stimulator (ODFS) is designed and distributed
exclusively by OML. The
ODFS is a CE marked device and is FDA approved for use in the United
States. |
|
| It is a pocket size medical device that helps to lift the dropped foot whilst walking. It applies small pulses of electrical stimulation to the nerves of the affected muscle, causing the muscle to contract and the foot to lift. The stimulation is applied to the outside of the leg using self adhesive patches called electrodes. The muscle contraction is timed to walking using a small switch placed inside the shoe. This technique is known as Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES). | |
Some walking ability is needed before the ODFS can be used. Typically the minimum requirements are to be able to standup from sitting unaided and be able to walk a minimum of ten metres using appropriate aides such as a walking stick or frame. Neither the devices or the treatments are suitable for all patients and it is critical that patients attend an initial assessment in order to assess both their suitability and the outcomes that can be expected for their individual circumstances. |
